The Awardee of 2011 Hong Kong Humanity Award - Mr Law Wai-cheung, Willy

"Whether they are able bodied or have disabilities, all should have the right to be treated with respect and dignity," Mr Law Wai-cheung, Willy once said. Handicapped with Spastic Cerebral Palsy since birth, Mr Law has never given up on himself. He even uses his own experiences to help the disabled fight for their rights and improve their lives.

Because of his disability, he could not stand up or sit down when he was a child. Each day, he was trapped at home. All he could do was to crawl to the door to peek into the outside world. At 12 years old, Mr Law was enrolled in the Hong Kong Red Cross John F. Kennedy Centre. With the encouragement and support of his schoolmates, Mr Law built a positive and persistent attitude. When he grew up, he started volunteering for humanitarian work, and fighting for disabled rights for the purpose of improving lives of the disabled.

Mr Law devotes much to volunteer services. Ten years ago, Mr Law started visiting people with varying degrees of handicaps and disabilities. He listened to their stories to understand their needs. He used his life as an example to encourage others to return to the society. He also taught those with severe physical disabilities to use a computer to communicate with others. Mr Law even custom built computers for the disabled to help them connect to the outside world and acquire new knowledge and information.

Between 2002 and 2006, Mr Law was Chairman of Direction Association for the Handicapped. He has been actively
involved in researches on health care polices or other polices related to the disabled. Mr Law also represents the disabled to reflect their views in government department meetings to increase public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with physical impairments. His mission, is to ensure that the physically handicapped will also enjoy basic rights and respect in the society.
