The Awardee of 2013 Hong Kong Humanity Award - Mr MAK Yiu-yeung, Sunny |
Mr Mak Yiu-yeung, Sunny, believes that “all men are born equal” and has a mission to help people at grassroots level. Over the years he has participated as a volunteer in various organizations. He was in particular moved by the selflessness of Mother Teresa and joined the organization she founded to visit AIDS and leprosy patients in India, Thailand and Cambodia. Returning to Hong Kong in 2008, he set up Sunshine Action, a charitable group with the aim to “feed the hungry and warm the abandoned” regardless of their religion, race and age. The group offers assistance to those neglected by society, care about them and help them regain dignity. Working in partnership with other local charitable groups, Mr Mak arranges volunteers of Sunshine Action to visit people living below the poverty line, as identified by the partner organizations. Sunshine Action will evaluate their needs and if required, provide food assistance to them for up to six months. The volunteers will also pay home visits every month afterwards to follow up on the recipients and provide support and care as needed. Sunshine Action does not receive government funding. It collects monetary and material donations from people from all walks of life and commits 100% of the donations to serving the needy. Although the volunteers have to bear the administration, transportation, accommodation and other costs themselves, Mr Mak’s work and spirit have inspired many who are willing to join him in humanitarian work. Since the establishment of Sunshine Action, the group has extended its services to cover various parts of the world including Mainland China, Thailand, Cambodia, the Philippines and India. The organization donates food and daily necessities to local charities in these places. It also funds heart surgeries for children in Mainland China. Mr Mak hopes to expand its services to different regions to make Sunshine Action a Hong Kong-based international charity.
