The Awardee of The first Hong Kong Humanity Award - Mr SO Wai-sang



Having experienced a poor health through out his childhood, Kwan Chung Hospital’s registered nurse (psychiatric) So Wai-sang decided to become professional in the medical field at a very young age. After graduating from secondary school, So worked at a half way house to look after patients recovering from mental illnesses. But having witnessed the unfair treatment given to patients, he left the half way house to study for psychiatric nursing.

In 1995, So became a registered nurse in psychiatry. Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with Nasopharyngeal cancer during the same year. But he did not give up his profession as a nurse. After recovering from the illness, he voluntarily participated in the editorial work in many hospital publications. In 2004, he was awarded as an outstanding employee at Kwai Chung Hospital.

So also dedicated his time to the families of patients suffering from mental illness. Between 2005 and 2006, he teamed up with patients’ families to promote anti-discrimination against mental illness in the media under the name of “life partners”.
So also formed a drama club gathering his colleagues at the hospital, families of the patients and secondary school students to write and perform dramas that were hoped to raise awareness of anti-discrimination against mental illness. These dramas won the club many awards, including an outstanding team award presented by the Hospital Authority. So is planning to bring these dramas to secondary and primary schools to spread the message of mental health care and the spirit of anti-discrimination.
