The awardee of the Second Hong Kong Humanity Award - Professor Martin WONG Chi-sang

Professor Martin Wong Chi-sang has participated in voluntary services for 20 years, serving chronically-ill patients and other vulnerable groups in Hong Kong and mainland China. He first became involved in voluntary works in secondary school. As a medical student he devoted time to care for childhood leukemia patients and wrote medical books.

Professor Wong joined the Regeneration Society in Hong Kong as volunteer after graduation and is currently the Chairman of both the Steering Committee and Executive Committee of the Society. He looks after patients with cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, depression and the physically handicapped. Professor Wong has also taken steps to promote a multidisciplinary service for chronically ill patients and organised more than 100 patient support groups. He has taken up the role of Chairman of the Organising Committee for‘ Ten Outstanding Warriors of Regeneration' for eight consecutive years to recognize the stoicism of chronically-ill patients and their strength in overcoming adversity.

In 2003 Professor Wong initiated and subsequently founded the Hong Kong Healthcare Professional Seminar Association and since then served as the Founding President. The association's 150 plus health care professionals strive for the holistic spiritual and physical care of chronically ill patients and their families by organizing patient support groups. Under the planning and leadership of Professor Wong, more healthcare professionals have been recruited to participate in the service and have made a commitment to strengthen the awareness and spirit of caring for chronically-ill patients in the local community. Members hope that the activities organized by the association will be seen as models for a caring society.

Professor Wong is now undertaking teaching, clinical and administrative works and scientific research in the Department of Community and Family Medicine amd the School of Public Health, Faculty of Medicine, the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
